Both of these types featured low open bodies mounted on former tank wagon underframes. The MTVs were designed for sand (although officially classfied as Ironstone tipplers) but also saw use carrying aggregates. All were withdrawn by 1990 and transferred to the civil engineers fleet as ZKV Zanders. The MTA design appeared in 1998 and many were converted from former private owner aggregate box wagons that had been built on tank wagon underframes in the 1980s. Others used tank wagons made redundant by the withdrawal of Shell from rail freight.
