Number Series List
Various series have been used for the numbers of UK railway rolling stock, and any given number can appear in more than one series. For example 5001 could refer to a Class 24 loco, a Mark 1 coach, a class 415 EMU or a POA scrap wagon. It was also carried by an ex-GWR loco, an ex-GWR coach and an ex-LMS coach. Prefixes and/or suffixes sometimes help distinguish similar numbers but they are not completely consistent.
The database that runs this website includes a series prefix to each number, to enable differentiation and sorting. So, taking the examples of 5001, these would be listed as LD-5001, CB-005001, MS-5001 and WP-05001 respectively. The further examples are not currently in the database but would be LB-05001, CW-05001 and CM-05001. The series prefix is not routinely shown but I thought it would be useful to list those which have been created.
The description of each number series given below covers the majority of items numbered in each series. Exceptions and seeming anomalies (such as the numbering of departmental coaches and locos in the ' Wagons - B/DB prefixed' series) will be noted in the Additional Information column.
