Summary: | An excellent overview of the electric unit types operated on the Southern, these two books detail everything from the LB&SCR overhead stock to the class 455s. |
Review: | Although there have been various books on the subject of Southern EMUs, the only ones in my collection are these two volumes written by the prolific Colin J Marsden and published in 1983. With narrative text and lots of excellent (and some rare) B&W photos, each chapter covers a different type. Volume 1 deals with units built before Nationalisation and is well illustrated, including interior shots and views of intermediate coaches. The second volume deals with the BR era, and includes EPBs, CEPs, CIGs and VEPs (among others). |

The cover of the first volume is in a suitable shade of green.
The first type covered is the 1898 Waterloo & City line stock.
Chapters for each type are headed with details of their construction and use.
The photographs are excellent and include some interesting views, such as 4-SUB carriages under construction.
An appendix in each volume summarises the numbers, dates and formations for all the types covered.
The BR era is covered in a second volume.
The photos are again excellent. This page on EPBs includes two units on Tyneside.
As with the first volume, a narrative overview of each type is given.
A section at the back of each volume looks at Departmental units. |
