Summary:An epic work, detailing the history of every single Mk1 and Mk2 loco-hauled coach to have operated on BR. Absolutely packed with information.
Review:This weighty book sets out to detail BR's Mk1 and Mk2 coaches. It is definetly what you would call a reference work, text being limited to a few pages of introduction and the captions to the numerous (and excellent) photographs. The amount of information that has been included is amazing, though some of the symbols and notation used to save space take a bit of getting used to. Apart from information about individual liveries and allocations, almost everything else you could want to know about these coaches is here.

Page image The cover
Page image After the introduction, the main part of the book is a listing of all coaches in numerical order. Each type is headed with drawings (from the BR diagram book) and build information.
Page image Numerous photos are spread throughout the book. Some are modern views of preserved coaches but there are also plenty of images from earlier in the period covered.
Page image Non-passenger carrying stock is included, with all renumberings shown with dates. Other dates are for into service, withdrawal and disposal. Changes of regional prefix are also given, again with dates.
Page image Towards the back of the book are some very useful lists. The first covers coaches given numbers in the private owner series. Note that this covers all numbers, not just Mk1s and Mk2s.
Page image Next is a comprehensive list of DB975xxx and DB977xxx departmental conversions, again with a lot of dates and again including types of source vehicles other than Mk1/2s.
Page image A list of internal user renumberings covers only BR Mk1s and Mk2s, while all the Carflat conversions are shown, irrespective of origins.
Page image An interesting appendix shows the renumbering 'chains' for coaches that were renumbered more than once. This is particularly useful for the parcels vans, many of which carried four or more different numbers.
Page image Another welcome appendix is a complete listing of BR coach lot numbers, including multiple unit vehicles. This list goes up to lot 31146 of 1995, though I have seen reference to numbers up to 31352 also being used.
Page image A third appendix lists all the new-build batches covered by the book, grouped by their diagram number.
Page image Two final appendices show train formations. The first shows scheduled formations for various routes in the period 1964 to 1978. The second (not shown here) lists the actual coach numbers in the Southern Region's fixed sets as at 1969.
