Summary: | Platform 5 (and later SCT) detailed the declining departmental coaching stock fleets in five books between 1984 and 1993. |
Review: | Starting in 1984, Platform 5 published books detailing both the track machine and departmental coaching stock fleets. The coaching stock book initially covered the DB975xxx and DB977xxx series along with the four regional series (DEx, DMx, DSx and DWx), and full build details for each source vehicle was provided. Later editions added coach-based internal user vehicles, while a useful feature was a listing of BR coach lots. Departmentals expert Roger Butcher was involved in the first edition and went on to co-author the later ones. A fourth edition (not seen or reviewed) was published by SCT in 1993, though by that time the size of the departmental coaching stock fleet was reducing rapidly. |

The cover of the 64-page first edition.
Each group of numbers was listed. Note that multiple-unit vehicles were shown separately, and that build details were shown for each vehicle.
The first issue had just 4 B&W photos, plus 2 colour photos on the covers.
The third edition was published in 1987 and had 80 pages.
The layout was still the same, except that multiple-unit vehicles were now integrated, and build details were not shown for former BR-built coaches.
The photo count had been bumped up to 27, all excellent and all B&W apart from the 2 on the covers.
A listing of internal users had been added from the second issue. This was limited to former coaches and vans only, wagons were not included.
The reason that build details for BR coaches were not included was that a complete BR coach lot listing was included, thus avoiding a lot of repetition. All coaches and parcels vans were included, along with any multiple unit lots that had seen conversions to departmental stock.
A fourth edition appeared in 1990 and had 96 pages with 28 photos (3 in colour).
Inside the only change to the format was that the lot listing now included all BR mutiple units. As such it now took up 17 pages. |
