Summary:These small books were crammed with photos and information and were among the first mainstream titles to cover wagons.
Review:Ian Allan's Recognition series was expanded in 1984 with three volumes covering rolling stock. Volume 1 (not covered here) looked at Coaching Stock, Volume 2 covered the revenue wagon fleets and Volume 3 the Departmentals. Packed with black and white photos, they gave many of us a first introduction to the subject. Although the photos are rather on the small size, the coverage is good and the captions informative. As a bonus there are also lists of TOPS codes and a few small line drawings. In addition to TOPS groups Q, Y and Z, Volume 3 also had chapters on departmental locos and multiple-units, track maintenance machines and internal users. Both books ended with a short selection of photos of complete trains.
