Category: | Classification/Coding |
Subject: | Design/Diagram FG005A |
Text: | Design code FG005A was initially assigned to wagons 699002 and 699003, built in 1972 to diagram 1/136 and lot 3730. These formed the 'Lowliner B' set, a prototype for a new generation of container-carrying wagons. The Lowliner name was rather confusingly also used for the FZA 4-wheeled wagons intended to carry road vehicles. The 'Lowliner B' unusually had 6-wheeled bogies and the wagons were basically 60ft in length. There appears to have been a change of plan, with codes in the FGxxxx series to be reserved for standard Freightliner outer wagons. The FG005A wagons were changed to FHA-L and design code FH002A, although there was also a mention of them becoming FZ015A. It would appear that the FG005A design code was later re-used for 601995, an experimental double-ended Freightliner wagon built in 1981 and renumbered from departmental (research) number RDB998546 (YXA to YX039A) in 1990. |
