Text: | This DMU car, along with partner 78851, were converted in 1982 as prototypes for a plan to achieve economies by reducing 3-car trains to 2-cars. The centre trailer car was to be removed (for re-use elsewhere), as would one of the two engines on each of the power cars. Although performance would have been reduced (half the power for a train that weighed a bit over two-thirds of the original), it was reasoned that maintenance costs would be halved. Conversion of a total of 225 units was planned, with blocks of numbers in the 78xxx range assigned to various classes. In the event, only the class 111 units (which already had higher-powered Rolls Royce engines) were done. The coach classifications were changed with the letter H (for Half power) replacing the M, as in DHCL and DHBS. |
