Category:Other/General
Subject:Batch PR3170-PR3247
Text:Built to transport concrete sections for the channel tunnel from a construction site on the Isle of Grain to Shakespeare Cliff (near Dover), these wagons were divided between 24 Outer wagons (with conventional drawgear at one end and an AAR buckeye at the other) and 54 Inner wagons (with AAR buckeyes at both end). They re-used bogies from scrapped tank wagons and there were two types used, resulting in four design codes. PX029G was for inner wagons with clasp brakes (48 wagons), PX029H for outer wagons with clasp brakes (20 wagons), PX029K for inner wagons with disc brakes (6 wagons) and PX029L for outer wagons with disc brakes (4 wagons). When new they were painted yellow with a large TML logo on each side and featured an inspection platform fitted quite high up on each end.

These wagons were essentially just open boxes so the use of the PXA code may seem odd. However, the decision had been made to reserve the POA code for 2-axle box wagons, and the only other code for bogie open wagons was PNA, which referred to pallet-carrying wagons.

Under the TOPS reshuffle of January 1990, the code of PXA-Z was changed to KEA-Z, ie still in the special-purpose category. Other PXA box wagons were recoded as JNA, JRA or JXA (in the non-specialised Jxx group).

The wagons remain in use on general aggregates duties, many having lost their inspection platforms. Livery of most of the wagons could best be described as 'dirt' and it is possible they are actually still yellow underneath!
