You are right! This same allocation was shown against A981-983HLT, which certainly were bullion vans. In fact, the three Mercedes seem to have replaced Transits YMM595H and VLF975/976S, in March 1984. I have amended the caption.

If you think about it, UK police vehicles didn't have toughened glass until sometime after the 1981 riots IIRC (initially there had fixed grilles bolted over the windscreens, later the hinged pull-down ones used on public order vans today). Even 'black marias', prison vans, etc had normal-looking glass. So I suggest this van was used for some form of cash-in-transit.

Hmm, I didn't think of that. However, a little digging found that VLF975-978S were new in Sept 1977 and allocated to the 'Chief Operating Manager (Railways)(Police)(Gp1)', seemingly to replace the YMM/H batch.Tue 06/03/2012, 01:16
Is the blue vehicle a bullion van? I think these were used to take staff wage-packets to depots etc.

I've been told thoughts are turning to the next generation of these vehicles, which would seem to imply a much shorter life than their Volvo or Mercedes predecessors.

Correcting myself, Honda 6308H is also still in LBSL use, seen at Uxbridge today.Sat 25/02/2012, 00:09
Grey stripe is reflective in order to comply with 'ece104' regulations more here - http://solutions.3m.co.uk/wps/portal/3M/en_GB/TrafficSafety/Systems/-/VehicleSafetyMarkings/ReflectiveTapes/ECE104Explained/ and high level rail is to comply with 'working at height' regulations for any staff working on the load bed.Thu 23/02/2012, 02:02
Weren't they on trade plates to start with?Tue 21/02/2012, 18:16
The main storage area is actually below the rider's seat - which hinges upwards. Let's hope there's a rubber-cushioned shelf inside!Tue 21/02/2012, 18:14
yes it was bought new.Mon 20/02/2012, 18:03
My August photo was taken soon after delivery (and before the reg. plate was fitted!)Mon 20/02/2012, 17:59
To amplify, 2411B was delivered with the wrong reg., as photographed, but was corrected as it entered service.Mon 20/02/2012, 17:55
I do hope that top-box has some kind of shock absorbing lining fitted if it is designed to carry glass enclosed relays. I can just imagine the result of a few speed humps taken too enthusiastically! Incidentally, this is not a new idea being first suggested over 10 years ago, but not approved by Distribution Services at that time.Sun 19/02/2012, 19:38
The blue Iveco is in full ERU use (i.e. all the police equipment - whatever that was - has been removed and replaced by railway items, the other BTP LWB Iveco has also followed suit).Sun 19/02/2012, 17:50
I saw both vehicles on M27, I was on route to beaulieu to the james bond exhibition, did go to works the following day, Alleys seem to be trundling up the M1 past milton keynes regular as well Tue 14/02/2012, 13:09
This van was used by the Area Engineers, of which I was one. Travelled many miles in this van.Sat 11/02/2012, 19:58
I had a serious accident in this vehicle in January 1975. Vehicle was written off and the engine went into a narrow boat.Sat 11/02/2012, 19:55
Probably not based at the garage, but where? The Heathrow extension opened in 1975, the year this was delivered and it may have been used in connection with this, based at one of the Hounslow stations. The 'Urgent' box was possibly added when it was transferred to Whitechapel.Wed 08/02/2012, 22:08
The Köf series of locomotives were all built to a very low profile, apparently to allow them to be carried on flat wagons when they needed to be moved between locations.Mon 06/02/2012, 23:01
This office is now closed.Sun 05/02/2012, 19:46
These two cars are indeed based here as LBSL has office accomodation within the office village. I don't think there is any intention to base these in the bus station, although they may park there from time to time.Sun 05/02/2012, 19:45
AJX I believe will be departing soon, sadly.Sun 05/02/2012, 19:36
Interesting how the gauge profile of the locomotive almost matches that of the tube stock.Sun 05/02/2012, 16:43
There are slight differences within the 58-reg batch. 6607M has, for example, hazard lights fitted within the grille whereas 6606M has them fitted belowFri 03/02/2012, 13:08
Thanks Adam, I must have had my brain out of gear. It is indeed South Wales Transport rather than than South West Transport. The caption has been corrected.Wed 25/01/2012, 19:13
Shell had a display stand at the open days and I think this was part of the Shell Transport collection.Wed 25/01/2012, 17:34
Looks like a VAS, not sure who built the body but it has Duple front end parts.Wed 25/01/2012, 14:23
South WALES Transport surely?Wed 25/01/2012, 14:21
Several people have pointed out that the BTP only had two of these Ivecos, so I have amended the caption accordingly.Mon 23/01/2012, 23:36
I've only ever seen Iveco's L91 and L92 in BTP use. I think these may be based at ERU depots during the Diamond Jubilee/Olympic period.Mon 23/01/2012, 18:28
yes, it's Cornwall RoadMon 23/01/2012, 13:11
Actually it was sold to me and I just happened to be visiting FW that day. I didn't remove the transfers for some time! johnMon 23/01/2012, 12:44
The ELP series of registrations were allocated in blocks between Nov. '37 and Jan. '38.Mon 23/01/2012, 12:11
Oh yes, I stand corrected. On closer inspection, there is actually one on the bonnet as well!Mon 23/01/2012, 10:22
A green 'Tramlink' can just be made out on the rear hard coverMon 23/01/2012, 08:20
The Routemaster by the way is RM8 from the Experimental Dept.Thu 05/01/2012, 01:20
I'm sure I have a picture of one of these in the preservation era. I used to see it regularly at the Showbus event where it was parked alongside a stall selling bits and pieces of London Transport buses etc.Wed 04/01/2012, 21:14
This was indeed new to the Fire SDervice College at Morton on the Marsh, however it wasn't Bristol Fire Brigade afterwards. Bristol City Line is that City's bus operator and this vehicle was an air cushion recovery vehicle. I dont know if it survives now though. This is an excellent website by the way!Wed 04/01/2012, 21:05
DE wrote to let me know that the fleetnumber of this van was A148. He added that other ANA/Y registration appeared on other GMB service vehicles, including three Morris Marina vans.Sat 31/12/2011, 00:53
Registered in Chester. The last service vehicle bought by Crosville Motor Services.Sun 25/12/2011, 22:26

The GS bus was former GS47, as seen here: https://picasaweb.google.com/107128559835522255960/1967slides#5682693128034204514Sun 11/12/2011, 22:52
Ray has found a picture of this (or a similar vehicle) when new in 1942 on the LT Museum website. 1998/36029Sun 11/12/2011, 21:10
Thanks for the note Phillip. Sadly I don't have access to the official documents I used whilst researching this site and SUP15B. The only published reference to JXC354 I can put my hands on is LOTS SUP22 of 1981. This lists it as an ''Electric Mercury Platform Truck''.Sun 11/12/2011, 21:08
This vehicle was seen Leeds (National Express) Coach Station, 15th July 2009, with lightbar as pictured, but carrying 'Network Standards' in place of Service Delivery, on the doors.Sun 11/12/2011, 13:41
This vehicle was seen Heathrow Central Bus Station, 8th April 2010 carrying SR997 in the rear nearside window, & also A805Sun 11/12/2011, 13:37
Fleetnumbers for these two vans are now known.Sun 11/12/2011, 12:58
Thanks. I've added a link to GK10VTL.

Sun 11/12/2011, 12:57
It has been seen again at WN, so I will log a transfer.Sun 11/12/2011, 12:30
Hmm, looking at the distance between the offside rear light and the windows... I think you may be right!Sun 11/12/2011, 12:29
The van on the left looks more like an Anglia 307E than a Viva van.Sun 11/12/2011, 11:04
I think this is a petrol driven truck rather than electric. There are no battery boxes between the axles, it has a radiator and a conventional battery (6 Volt?) fitted just inside the door opening. The petrol Mercury tractors used the Ford 10hp engine from the E83W 10cwt van although other makes could be specified.Sun 11/12/2011, 11:00
They were unloaded in the lorry yard!Sun 11/12/2011, 09:06
Thanks Kim. I have edited the caption.Thu 10/11/2011, 11:20
Ehem....C Stock in the background, and for modification, not scrap!Sun 06/11/2011, 13:02
Answering my own question, no! It has just been reported that LL11LKF is in fact numbered 7117F. This arrived a few weeks before 7114F. But are there any older ones....?Fri 04/11/2011, 00:37
this is now GK10VTL for Sovereign Fri 21/10/2011, 10:15
I can shed some light on this, S&H send 2 trucks down to London to pick up Buses for refurb, this one pictured can go into the London Emission Zone (LEZ) so he picks one up , takes it to South Mimms services then back in to london for a 2nd to run back up with .Fri 21/10/2011, 10:11
LOL - yes Tom, I think I only had two Weetabix that morning rather than the regulation 3 for signpost moving.Wed 05/10/2011, 23:41
6517F on the left has a J-N-P logo on the passenger door, but a P-N-J logo on the front!Mon 26/09/2011, 23:49
YC11AEW is now confirmed as 7040FMon 26/09/2011, 23:41
Correcting myself, 2563M was most likely here for disposal, its role at Lillie Bridge having been taken over by a modified 5474F.

Maybe it collects up the caution that gets thrown to the wind by careless passengers!Thu 15/09/2011, 19:22
Trailer is confirmed to be T49Mon 05/09/2011, 17:16
This is T49, quite soon after it was repainted blue.Mon 05/09/2011, 17:14
This is T49, after modification but before repaint.Mon 05/09/2011, 17:13
I am fairly sure this is T49 before it was rebuilt.Mon 05/09/2011, 17:12
By chance I noted similar EJ03ODN in Erith today. It had had its lettering removed but the outlines were still clearly visible. Looked identical to that in the picture.Thu 01/09/2011, 02:20
Correct!Fri 05/08/2011, 21:11
I reckon it's the side indicators mounted on the black rubber thingys that the front one doesn't have.Sun 31/07/2011, 13:01
The square plates are opened to access hoses used for pumping operations.

Would it be that the currant bun has gone or that they are on a trunk route?Tue 26/07/2011, 09:19
They are used all the time. Lights were not removed they were stolen.Sat 23/07/2011, 21:56

Sorry, just found out this is not a Volkswagen Passat! It is a Volkswagen Golf. Equally rare as an SV though....

One Ford D, one Militant and two Titans seems excessive! Only one of the four comes from the Underground section however, so that may be the reason why two Titans were on show. You can find another photo of the suspect at Baker Street on Flickr (type in the number) but alas this is undatedSat 25/06/2011, 09:27
While looking for something else entirely I came across some nice pics that don't really resolve this question! Taken at the Bexleyheath Garage open day on 19th May 1979, one shows a Leyland Titan Breakdown Tender. It is captioned as 1276LD but is clearly 1416LD. Ray and LOTS both reported 1274LD being at the open day. Were there really two Titans present? In the above pic a sweeper is also visible. The other pic shows AEC Militant 1456MR with a Ford D towing truck also present.Sat 25/06/2011, 00:00
Thanks to the controller for closing the doors!Thu 12/05/2011, 12:51
This was a one-off error. Sorry. I will ensure that all royalties earned are passed on to the correct copyright holder!!Fri 06/05/2011, 00:21
As stated in the caption, the photo should be credited to me. This has only recently changed for some reason - are there any others?Tue 26/04/2011, 19:25
P851OLL was not used by Ensign and was sold on. As such, I have reverted the database entry to show the East Thames Buses details.Mon 18/04/2011, 01:37

This is a Mk VI Ford Escort.Sat 16/04/2011, 17:50
That's Chingford station and the garage behind can still be seen on Bing Maps birds eye view. The wooden LT canteen/and inspector's office (?) has given way to a brick, pitched roof, drivers' accomodation (no doubt offering minimum facilities!).

Northend Road, Thames Road is (still) a short turn on the 89Thu 07/04/2011, 18:25
I too believe the original caption to be correct. The signal is definitely on the up Kew line from Kew East Jn to Bollo Lane Jn and protects Bollo Lane (Kew Line) CCTV level crossing. The waste land between the entrance to Chiswick Works and the Kew line was once an Express Dairy depot. I remember when there was a signal box and footbridge at each of the level crossings, which then had wheel operated gates.Sun 03/04/2011, 15:51
You may be right and I initially thought likewise but due to the NLL running at an (obvious) angle (whereas the freight line is straighter) the reverse of the signal would only be seen from the road if on the curve from the NLL signal box and, as I assumed, facing south. Looking at this again it could be the signal is in fact facing the opposite direction and protecting the level crossing thus being on the freight line. In which case a trick of the light (which I must stop drinking)
Note: Edited by Ray, 03/04/11, 13:55.
Sun 03/04/2011, 13:50
The signal is actually on the South Acton to Kew East line (freight only) which runs beside the (now) staff car park. The entrance to Chiswick (and the buildings seen in the other pic) are just off frame to the left.Sun 03/04/2011, 13:24
The rear of the railway signal would indicate the NLL so the car would have passed the rear of Chiswick by then. Also the shot of 2062F, taken the same month, show buildings where the staff car park is 'shown' in this shot.Sat 02/04/2011, 13:23
GY10UHZ was being charged from this box todayWed 16/02/2011, 14:43
Ah yes, I forgot about those two. Which is funny seeing as I did publish a photo of one here!Sat 12/02/2011, 10:22
There were at least two Mondeo cars, seemingly attached to the vehicle inspectors teamSat 12/02/2011, 09:08
Saw it last night whilst out and about with camera at night and now shows SN08KWG , so not sure if new build on an older chassis or an ex somebodies
Note: Edited by richard, 20/02/11, 11:47. Now found out it is an ex MTS of Scotland hence the SN reg plate
