Details: Photographed on 24th July 1976, Land Rover 1842LR was an interesting vehicle for a number of reasons. New in January 1974, it was one of the first service vehicles to be given a registration number matching its fleetnumber (TJJ42M), and carried a non-standard green livery with a cream cover. It was allocated to the Chiswick High Road Garage, used at the time as the base for the Routemaster buses operated on behalf of British European Airways (later British Airways). It seems that 1842LR was used as an engineering support vehicle for this fleet, which would explain the roof beacons fitted. It is listed on LT Variation Sheets as being assigned to Chiswick BEA. Unfortunately the lettering below the fleetname cannot be made out in this picture. The airport buses were moved to Stonebridge in August 1978, to allow the Chiswick garage to be rebuilt for LT use (eventually re-opening as Stamford Brook in 1980), while the service was withdrawn the following March. 1842LR apparently stayed at Chiswick until May 1979, when it was transferred down the road to Chiswick Works for use by the RSE (Buses). It was withdrawn in 1982, but not sold until 1986. As already seen, it then re-appeared at Norwood Garage in 1987, undergoing restoration and repainted red. However, it does not seem to have survived, last being licensed in 1989.
