Hi Michael, welcome aboard and thanks for the comments. We have a picture of 2203F in the snow on Exmoor here. I also have a photo of 4133F at Acton in April 1993, still with its roof rack. I will publish this shortly.Thu 01/02/2007, 20:04
I have driven 3606F many times during my time as an Instructor at White City it replaced 2203F, apart from general use, the minibus's main use was for the Duke of Edinburgh award sheme for LT apprentices. During the spring and summer months 3606F was used to places such as the New Forest, Dartmoor and Exmour and would normally be away from Sunday to Friday, during April - September. the large rack (which was very heavy) was used to carry rucksacks etc and with up to 10 apprentices in it some time's, it was a very slow bus to drive, it had only a 1600 or 1800 engine in it if i remember. 3606F was replaced by J263LLT, fleet number 4133F, I picked it up from Acton on the day it was delivered, 4133F had a factory fitted roof rack, the Minibus was reallocated once the LT apprentice scheme ended.

AD03OOU and AE53LHR were added to the database a while ago (I must have forgotten to mention it!), while AF53HBA can also be added if anyone can confirm it is in use by TfL.Sun 14/01/2007, 19:46
Similar vehicles are AF53HBA (noted Old Kent Road on 09/01/2007) and AE53LHR (noted Carlisle Lane 2/11/2006)

The little black box hanging of the side may have something to do with the avl system becouse it looks the same as the boxes you get at the road side and to the ones that are fitted to the buses themselfs.Thu 14/12/2006, 19:54
Did the driver of 39 get a parking ticket parking in the 'ferry van' bay?

Note the Night Bus sticker in the windscreen! This was still carried after it was sold to Allco. It was then re-registered A820AEC and given an illuminated LT Urgent sign (off one of the Titans or Traders?) which was repainted grey and mounted off-centre due to the ladder hatch. A picture will be posted soon.Mon 20/11/2006, 22:12
Ah, there goes my theory about the logo colours then! Cheers anyway, and welcome on-board.Mon 20/11/2006, 21:22
The green Vauxhall Astra van T920BBK in the back ground is an Engineering van and not a crew ferry van, the reason i know this is cos i work at lea valley garage were the picture was taken

According to some trade literature seen at work, Lyntons also built the two semi-trailers used by BTP.Fri 10/11/2006, 11:46

At U today having towed in a Trident (17/10/2006)Tue 17/10/2006, 13:13
I recently re-input this batch of vans as being Dual-Fuel, as it had been noticed that they also have a petrol filler point on the nearside. However, the DVLA reports them all as pure petrol. Does anyone know if the LPG filler could be for some other purpose?Mon 16/10/2006, 23:03
The five ERU Volvos were registered in October 1998, so they are due for their Goods Vehicle Annual Test each October. I would think the sightings of bare chassis being moved is likely to be movements to and from servicing and testing. Servicing used to be done at Volvo Truck and Bus at Park Royal, the test at Yeading testing centre. When they were purchased the maintenance contract was for an initial 5 years with options to extend. The previous generation Mercedes 1114s lasted 8 years and the Volvo is better suited to ERU work, so they may last another couple of years, depending on condition and mileage. If they were about to be changed, replacement vehicles would already be in stock to allow for staff familiarisation before they enter service. Also, from memory, I think the de-mountable bodies (DB2 to DB6), which date from 1990 and were refurbished in 1998 when the Volvos were delivered, will be due for replacement with the next generation of ERU lorries. This trailer, or one very similar, was being towed by 5400M on 10th October at Acton.Thu 12/10/2006, 18:58
2569V was seen at the same location and in the same condition on 10th October. Are they perhaps due for replacement?Thu 12/10/2006, 18:19
After these vans had been in service for a short while, staff complaints were received about the lack of crew-cab windows. They were returned to Mercedes-Benz Edgware Road, who supplied the chassis and carried out all servicing and repairs, for windows to be installed. At least one, if not both, of the windows could be used as emergency egress in the event of an accident. This could be identified by the red coloured glazing rubber insert, with a ring-pull attached. Pulling the ring removed the rubber insert and allowed the glass to be pushed out of the frame. When the bodies were being built and fitted at Feltham Coachworks, it was noticed that the first two bodies had been installed on their chassis before the blue and red chevrons had been painted on the front bulkhead panel. To avoid removing the body, the chevrons were applied in situ. Because it was impossible to reach the whole of the front panel, the chevrons were only sprayed around the edges of the cab outline, leaving a plain white area behind the cab. I think the two vehicles involved were 2529M and 2530M. The bodies for the other two vans, had the chevrons painted over the whole of the front panel, before the bodies were mounted on their chassis.

This 'police'-type livery was inherited from the Traffic Control Systems Unit which looked after traffic lights following the abolition of the GLC. The GLC cars wore the same livery and ended up very anonymous after transfer to the TCSU as the front door lettering was removed and the orange stripe gradually faded.

I am reliably informed that the roof-rack fittings are a ladder carrier, the handles enabling ladders to be unloaded from ground level. Network Rail uses similar fittings on many of their vans.Sun 03/09/2006, 21:16
This car is on hire awaiting the delivery of a leased example, the evaluation having been undertaken on earlier HN05UOJ.Sun 03/09/2006, 21:14
My mistake. The Go-Ahead logos have been removed. They still look a lot like PVLs though, and as my nearest bus stop is served by two routes, one with PVLs and the other with whatever ETB puts out, confusion is common!Mon 28/08/2006, 13:42
Although this lorry has full drop-sides (ie no fixed sections as sometimes found on half-tilts) the cleats fitted to the forward doors show where the tilt would have reached to.Mon 28/08/2006, 13:40

As the links show, the car on the right was new as OE02YNF, then reregistered VLT240. By the date of the photograph it had reverted to original, the VLT mark being transferred to a bus.Mon 28/08/2006, 13:35

Iveco Daily AD03OOU is the vehicle seen by Tom Young & I at Acton Works on 22nd February 2006Mon 28/08/2006, 12:28
Interesting connection: The arches behind were occupied by pirate bus operators in the twenties. I think I'm right in saying 194 was occupied by Percy Frost-Smith and nearby 192 was home to Imperial Buses (not the Imperial we know today!). Liberty also ran from one of these arches. I expect there were others but I'm no expert.

It is Parsons Green with Harbledown Road behind. Many a Saturday morning as an 11/12 year-old I spent climbing the walls of the flats to look over into the yard! Eventally I plucked up courage to ask the gate-keeper (after 1pm of course) and it was open house from then on.

These buses actually run from Belvedere rather than Mandela Way, and they have recently been given new fleetnumbers (in random order) in the VP series. Although treated to East Thames lettering, they still carry London General livery and Go-Ahead logos, rather confusingly.Tue 04/07/2006, 09:34
Ah yes, it's a Citroen Xsara rather than a Renault Megane! Thanks for pointing that out.Tue 04/07/2006, 09:30
If Tom has now moved to support France in the World Cup then he should realise that this is a Citroen not a RenaultSun 02/07/2006, 20:58

Could this be Gardiners Corner, Aldgate?Fri 09/06/2006, 15:21
The picture shows 2533M as built, the dropside body was not de-mountable. When the 'first generation' ERU vans (2529-2532M) were specified, there was also a need for a vehicle to undertake delivery and collection of signalling equipment and 2533M was offered by Distribution Services. In its dropside form it wasn't suitable, so it went to Feltham Coachworks to be rebodied. I can't be certain but the original tail-lift was probably retained and in fact the new body may well have been a conversion of the old one to a box van.Thu 08/06/2006, 08:01
Staff bus RF314 was the only known exampleSat 03/06/2006, 16:56
Also of interest the RF to the left with an ''open'' LT roundel. Was this a staff bus? I never knew of any so-fitted in the passenger fleet.Sat 03/06/2006, 16:51

This is used by the LUL Rostered Duty Officer. I believe it replaced 4479V the unique Vauxhall Frontara 4x4, the latter of course being liveried.

This is the Signal Courior Van (codenamed ''Black Van'' for movement logging purpopses by the ERU)and is used to move parts to and from the main Acton Works signal store. Earlier generations of van were once equipped with rubber-lined shelves in order to carry delicate items like signal relays safely but such provison ended after the task passed from the Signal Dept to the ERU.Mon 29/05/2006, 08:16
As per my Forum comments of earlier today, I am now virtually certain this is KC04YJVSat 25/03/2006, 16:43

AV03 XZY is another Ford and BL55 APF is a new Vauxhall Astra. Both at New Cross Gate 21/3/06Tue 21/03/2006, 14:22
The neighbouring vehicle was N999BTP as suggested, and is apparently soon to be disposed of, although the 'cherished' registration mark will be retained, presumably for future use.Sat 18/03/2006, 11:54
Many Almex silver cars carried the London Buses roundel in red on their front doors for a while but these were later removed, perhaps due to copyright issues?Sat 18/03/2006, 04:17
Perhaps more interesting is the vehicle to the left, which looks like the BTP's former London area control vehicle N999BTP (not its original reg.) and was based I believe in the old LT Vanden Street private car garage near 55 Broadway. Presumably it's been replaced by a more modern vehicle as part of the response to 7/7. Whilst it cannot it anyway be classed as an LT/TfL service vehicle, it does show that the procurement relationship forged in the days of the LT Police continues to this day.Sat 18/03/2006, 04:07
This was taken at the Sevenoaks bus rally and running day on 8th August 1993. The chap who owns this vehicle had a habit of displaying bizarre blinds on this vehicle at the time.Fri 17/03/2006, 19:40

An excellent picture!
But I'm terribly confused about which Militant is which!

 · XGP389W is at the Brooklands Museum in Surrey.
 · The Blue Triangle (now Imperial) Militant is registered Q888FLE.

BUT ... recent pictures of XGP389W show it has just one offside wing mirror and two on the nearside, as shown in early pictures of 1456MR. Q888FLE looks EXACTLY like the Militant in the above picture, with close-coupled twin wing mirrors on both sides.

Now this might sound barmy. Was the Militant above re-registered Q888FLE, and the reg XGP389W transferred to the Militant now at Brooklands?

Regards, Neil Fraser

It was built in 1937, I have the original paperwork! It was withdrawn from service in Mid 2003 purely because of new regulations. Should it have got a long service award for 66 years service?Fri 28/10/2005, 17:56
