Details: Like London Country, London Transport also converted some redundant single decker buses for other roles in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Of the five AEC Swifts involved I only seem to have photos of two, the one shown here being former SMS753. In November 1978 this was rebuilt as a mobile publicity vehicle and renumbered SPB753. It lasted in this role until it was replaced by 1234L in 1982, although it remained in stock until the end of 1985 and was eventually acquired for preservation. It was photographed at an unknown location (Potters Bar garage perhaps) before it was restored to original condition. By co-incidence the other vehicle that I have photographs of (SMD/STB91) also started its second life in November 1978, and was also later preserved. Photos of the other three vehicles, all of which were scrapped, would be welcomed. They were stores vehicle SMS300, recruitment bus SMD441 and information bus SMS730.

Mick OvertonThat is indeed Potters Bar and that is me about to get into drivers seat. I have some decent photos of it and the other Swift service vehicles i will be happy to share here if you want them - no upload facility so contact me if you would like them.SMD67 was used as a Horse Bus Information centre at Baker Street in July 1979 right before it was sold - many would regard this as being nonpsv work for LT!Wed 03/02/2016, 01:04
