25th February 2018
Not wagon news as such but I have just been looking at the size of the current UK fleet and can present some statistics that I hope will be of interest. I will cover the events of the past year in the near future.

This first table shows the quantity of UK-registered wagons to each TOPS code as at the beginning of 2018. The source is the 'UK Wagons 2018' book by ST Publications, available for £12.50 and seemingly fairly accurate. If there are any errors, they are likely to be from my own calculations.

The table also shows the quantities in each number series, these being air-braked (AB), B/DB-prefixed (BP), On-track plant (CEPS), Private Owner (PO) and 'International'/EVN (RIV). The book includes wagons that are out of use but which remain on TOPS, accounting for the few odd codes that still appear (such as YMB).

NB. Entries suffixed 'd' are 'secondary' numbers, where one wagon is given two different numbers. The totals are based on the older number. This does mean that there are actually more than 3022 UK wagons with EVNs.

The second table compares the 2018 wagon fleet with that of 1986, 1999 and 2005. Because of the huge number of TOPS codes involved, this shows only the top-level groupings (GENKOCs). Other data sources for this table are; information published in Rail Enthusiast magazine (1986), a list obtained from the defunct gbrail.org website (1999) and the Combined Wagon Datafile by the Inter-City Railway Society (2005).

Latest additions and changes to LTSV Wagons

25th February 2018
Oh dear. Over a year since the last edit and I am still not able to bring the site up to date. I have suffered two significant setbacks. Firstly, my Windows broke last autumn and I had to reformat my drive. Almost everything was backed-up, but I did lose parts of both my data sources and my website development work. Secondly, I discovered that the techniques I was proposing to use for the upgraded website are in fact out-of-date and I am having to teach myself some new stuff (eg PDO, MySQLi, Javascript and CSS3) before starting afresh on the new pages.

One of the things I was working on before the computer trouble was a set of pages giving statistics on the size of the UK wagon fleet. These were almost complete but they were rather unwieldy and I am looking at ways of presenting the information in a more interactive way. In the meantime, I have just completed a quick survey of the current wagon fleet and the results are published on the left. For comparison, I have included high-level stats for the years 1986, 1999 and 2005. Scroll-down to see these.

There is of course a lot of wagon news to catch up on, and many of the data pages on this site need to be updated. I hope to make a start on both tasks very soon.
